A Viennese court sentenced two former officers of the toppled Syrian regime to eight years in prison each after they were convicted of torture and sexual assault crimes against detainees in Raqqa between 2011 and 2013. The court found the defendants—namely, the former head of the Raqqa intelligence branch and a former police officer—guilty of torture, bodily harm, aggravated coercion, and sexual coercion against 12 victims, and ordered them to pay compensation. This trial is part of Europe's efforts to prosecute officials responsible for crimes during the Syrian revolution, under the principle of universal jurisdiction.
