A regional court in Vienna sentenced former Syrian security officials to eight years in prison after convicting them of serious violations committed during the Syrian conflict. The crimes include torture, sexual coercion, and severe physical injuries inflicted on detainees between 2011 and 2013. The court also ordered the defendants to pay €130,000 in compensation to the victims. It stated that the accused participated in systematic acts of torture targeting opposition members within detention centers in Raqqa, despite their denial of awareness of the abuses. This trial is part of the application of the principle of "universal jurisdiction" to prosecute former Syrian officials for crimes committed during the war. The charges involve Khaled L.H., a former Syrian intelligence general, and Musab A.R., a former police officer.
