2026 World Cup: Spain's National Team Sets Records After Victory Over Portugal
Spain's national team secured an important 1-0 victory over Portugal in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, continuing their journey in the tournament and qualifying for the quarterfinals. Currently, Spain is experiencing a historic period, as they have extended their longest undefeated streak to 35 matches, equaling their previous record set between 2007 and 2009. They are now among the top European teams to achieve such a feat. Additionally, their goalkeeper set a record by maintaining a clean sheet for 609 minutes, becoming the first goalkeeper in World Cup history to reach this milestone, breaking the previous record held by Italian goalkeeper Walter Zenga. Coach Luis de la Fuente is leading the team to impressive results, having maintained an unbeaten record in his first 12 matches at the World Cup and European Championship, and winning the European title at Euro 2024. The 1-0 scoreline is considered Spain’s favorite outcome in the tournament, as they have won by this margin seven times since 2010—a unique record among the major teams.
