The Egyptian government failed to launch the "Direct Discount" system for subsidized bread that was scheduled for the beginning of the 2026/2027 fiscal year. The launch was postponed until August 1st due to technical and financial challenges in completing the digital readiness and operational setup. The system aims to support approximately 63.7 million citizens at an estimated cost of 170 billion Egyptian pounds and represents an important step in the strategy to shift from in-kind subsidies to cash assistance. Efforts are also underway to connect wheat production with the development of electronic payment systems. This postponement has sparked parliamentary anger and disagreements over the exclusion of some citizens from the subsidy cards, amid ongoing obstacles in fully implementing the system.
