Spain has experienced an unprecedented immigration crisis, with nearly 50,000 illegal migrants flooding the city of Ceuta since the beginning of the crisis. More than 48,000 of them voluntarily returned to Morocco, while fewer than 2,000 remained under Spanish control. Security forces attempted to stop the flow of migrants by deploying tear gas and facing stone-throwing, amid the closure of the Beni Enzar crossing since Thursday to contain the crisis. This represents the largest mass crossing from Morocco since 2021, following a Spanish judicial ruling that prohibits immediate deportations, which has been seen as providing a greater opportunity for asylum requests. European countries such as Italy and France have imposed strict measures at their borders with Spain. Officials confirmed that the crisis is under control and that most migrants have returned to Morocco.
