The migrant crisis at the border between Spanish Ceuta and Morocco resulted in the death of 67 people, after tens of thousands attempted to cross the border fence. Most of them were sent back to Morocco, according to the Spanish Interior Ministry. The government is installing a containment barrier along the entire fence to prevent similar incidents in the future. Security forces have also rescued exhausted migrants who swam to the shore and assisted them across the border. Ceuta and Melilla are the only land borders Europe has in Africa, and the migration issue from Morocco to these two cities has become a sensitive political matter between the two countries.
