An ex-pilot accused of attempting to assassinate Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the failed coup attempt in 2016 has been arrested. The Counter-Terrorism Center stated that the pilot, who has been dismissed from service and is listed on the wanted persons' red notice, was located hiding in Afyon Province in western Turkey. The July 15, 2016 coup attempt resulted in the deaths of 253 people. The Turkish government considered that day "Democracy and National Unity Day." Erdoğan addressed the nation by phone, calling for protests against the coup, and the public responded widely, preventing the success of the attempt.
