Greece Faces Battle to Protect Coastal Area from Fires
Under the influence of strong winds reaching speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour, Greece is struggling to save a coastal tourist area in northwest Athens from wildfires that have burned more than 4,000 to 5,000 hectares, destroying homes in the Porto Germeno region. Naval evacuations have been initiated for around 300 people amid intensive efforts by hundreds of firefighters and aircraft. However, the fires remain raging and are hindering containment due to harsh weather conditions. Additionally, the fires, which have affected other areas such as Crete and Paros, have caused significant environmental and economic losses, with fatalities reported among firefighting personnel so far.
