Reports have indicated that hackers targeted the water supply and sewage infrastructure in the United States, with attacks on at least seven water companies since July 2026. These assaults have led to a decline in service quality, a shift to manual operations, and warnings issued to residents to boil their water. Investigators explained that the attackers are exploiting programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to remotely manipulate industrial processes, aiming to disrupt monitoring and control functions, which could result in untreated water leaks into the networks. The investigation is linked to efforts by entities associated with Iran exploiting security vulnerabilities, but U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed the notion that Iran was responsible, suggesting instead that the attacks could be carried out by local actors due to a lack of expertise.
