Infantino Loses Trust After Abandoning Project
Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, retracted his plan to sell tournament rights and share a portion of the profits with investors after widespread opposition from the European Union (UEFA) and the North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF). This has resulted in a loss of trust, threatening his chances of securing a fourth term. The goal of the project was to raise approximately $4.2 billion through a stake in a company managing commercial rights. However, the crisis exposed governance flaws within FIFA and a lack of transparency, prompting strong reactions from the European Union and other members, along with warnings about conflicts of interest and violations of governance rules, placing Infantino's political future at significant risk.
