Following an influx of approximately 60,000 migrants, most of them from Morocco, into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta during this week, a security and political crisis has emerged between Spain and the European Union on one side, and neighboring countries on the other. Ceuta, home to around 84,000 residents, witnessed large-scale attempts to cross the borders by land and sea, resulting in the drowning of 35 migrants, while more than 48,000 individuals returned to Morocco. Spain, Italy, and France responded to this crisis by tightening border security measures: Spain sent additional forces, France increased police personnel to 334, and Italy implemented tighter border checks with Spain. This constitutes the largest migrant surge since 2021 and occurs amid political tensions following the Spanish Prime Minister's visit to Algeria. The crisis serves as a test of the robustness of European cooperation in managing migration flows.
