Kumamoto quake death toll reaches 38

The death toll from the earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan has risen to 38 people, with more than 9,200 individuals in evacuation centers. Many of them were killed by the 7.1 magnitude quake, and extensive damage assessments to buildings and residents are currently underway. Efforts to restore water supplies and infrastructure continue, as hundreds of homes have sustained varying degrees of damage. The rising temperatures have increased the risk of heatstroke among those stranded, with dozens of casualties being transferred to medical facilities.
