European Pursuit of Russian Shadow Fleet
The article highlights a European operation led by Italy to monitor and intercept a Russian vessel from the "Shadow Fleet" in the Mediterranean Sea, as part of the European Union's efforts to detect ships exposed for violating Russian oil sanctions. In a move that was the second of its kind within two weeks, EU naval forces intercepted the oil tanker "Tua Beiwa," recently registered in Cameroon and subject to EU sanctions. European authorities inspected the vessel with support from ships and aircraft belonging to several countries to verify the legality of its flag and registration documents, without issuing a detention order at this time. These operations are part of the EU's broader effort to combat the evasion of economic sanctions imposed on Moscow since the invasion of Ukraine, with a particular focus on ships using false flags or operating under secret fleets to facilitate the export of Russian oil.
