Rural Damascus security chief meets Ain Menine residents
The Director of Internal Security in Rural Damascus, Brigadier Ahmad Al-Dalatan, stated that the Syrian government respects citizens' right to peaceful protest and emphasizes that arrests have only targeted those proven to be involved in acts of rioting and chaos, without pursuing participants in peaceful demonstrations. He explained that the protests in Ain Menin began over a local dispute regarding underground water reserves and escalated into acts of looting and renewed protests. The village council submitted its collective resignation, and protesters have demanded the release of detainees and the removal of an excavator that is fueling the conflict. Sources indicated that the security approach has increased tension, and the government accuses some influential figures of exploiting the crisis for personal gains, while local residents express fears that the water crisis is being used to ignite conflicts among the community.
