Chinese observatory finds cosmic ray source
The China-based Large Dish Radio Telescope has achieved the discovery of the strongest cosmic ray accelerator to date, known as "The Chicken X-3." It is a binary system composed of a compact object—such as a black hole or a neutron star—and a massive companion star. This system has been able to accelerate particles to energies no less than 30 peta-electron volts, a level significantly higher than previous theoretical expectations, which were around one peta-electron volt. Additionally, a very high-energy gamma-ray signal lasting 4.8 hours was observed, with the acceleration region estimated to be nearly three times the radius of the Sun. This discovery opens new horizons for studying extreme physical processes near compact objects like black holes and is considered one of the most significant breakthroughs in astrophysics related to high-energy particles.
