Morocco: Fake News and Human Trafficking in Ceuta and Melilla
The Moroccan Ministry of Interior confirmed that the recent events at the crossing points of Ceuta and Melilla are not accidental but result from the exploitation of digital platforms, the spread of misleading information, the actions of human trafficking gangs, and misinterpretations of the law, all aimed at convincing migrants of easy means to breach European borders. The ministry revealed that approximately 40,000 people attempted to cross to Ceuta and 1,135 to Melilla, and all those who arrived in Melilla have been returned. There has been one recorded death due to a fall from a rocky area and ten cases of drowning. The high-speed attempts to cross, especially by swimming, driven by the belief that crossing is easy, have led to tragic outcomes. Authorities are continuing to verify reports of potential deaths in Ceuta.
