Sudan removes armed groups from gold zones
The Sudanese National Security and Defense Council issued strict decisions prohibiting the presence of military and security forces in mining areas, and ordering the confiscation of illegal weapons and vehicles. Additionally, specialized courts have been established to prosecute crimes related to drug trafficking, human trafficking, smuggling of weapons and gold, aiming to strengthen the rule of law and combat organized crime. These measures come after security campaigns targeting illegal mining networks along the border with Egypt, amid increasing gold smuggling and chaos caused by ongoing conflicts, which have led to overlapping activities of mining, weapons proliferation, and crime. The sector is a main source of foreign currency but has suffered from marginalization and security weaknesses. The authorities did not specify the timeline for implementing these decisions or the locations of the courts, but they emphasize their continued efforts to enhance national security and stability.
