Libyans face election law challenges
The article focuses on the ongoing efforts and discussions surrounding the approval of election laws in Libya, with the aim of overcoming the obstacles that have stalled the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections since the failure of the 2021 elections. It emphasizes that the disagreements are not limited to legal texts but also extend to disputes over candidacy conditions, the powers of institutions, and the future authority, turning the issue of laws into a political battleground to serve the interests of the ruling parties. It also notes that progress in current understandings depends on consensus around the legal framework and constitutional basis, with the necessity of genuine political backing to implement any agreement, especially since the stability of the electoral process is dependent on sensitive issues such as candidacy conditions and the timing of elections, particularly after the collapse of the 2021 pathway.
