For the first time in over seven years, Israeli authorities have charged a Jewish settler with killing a Palestinian activist in the West Bank. The charges relate to the shooting of Awwad Al-Hadhalin, a well-known activist who participated in an Oscar-winning documentary, during a confrontation in July 2025 when settlers attempted to operate an excavator in a Palestinian village. The settler, Yinon Levi, denied firing the shot, despite footage showing him drawing his weapon and shooting at Al-Hadhalin, who was heard suffering after being hit. This incident is considered the most significant since the escalation of violence between settlers and Palestinians, along with clashes with Hamas in October 2023. Organizations such as B’Tselem and Yesh Din regard the charge as a rare exception amid a broader policy of not holding Israeli settlers accountable for their assaults.
