Europe Faces Border Monitoring Risks
The European Union's Internal Affairs and Migration Commissioner stated that the Union must use all its influence on Morocco, including visa policies and trade, to ensure its cooperation in combating irregular migration. The government discussed that approximately 72,000 migrants entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta last week in the largest crossing since years, reflecting the EU's reliance on agreements with North African countries to curb migration. Human rights organizations criticized smuggling networks and called for the strengthening of safe migration pathways. Officials confirmed that Morocco has attempted since 2023 to prevent more than 227,000 crossing attempts and has dismantled over 1,050 smuggling networks. European officials emphasize the necessity of cooperating with Morocco, but some believe that the primary responsibility should remain with Europe to ensure border control.
