First AI-driven viruses raise security issues

For the first time, scientists have succeeded in designing viruses using artificial intelligence, specifically within the category of bacteriophages that infect bacteria and are used to treat resistant infections. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that these designed viruses eradicated antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli bacteria, after selecting and manufacturing about 300 models from thousands of designs generated by AI. Despite the success of the experiment, experts warned about biological safety risks and the potential for misuse, calling for strict regulations on the production and development of genomes of dangerous viruses in the future.
