Syria has handed over Major Adel Issa, a former officer in the ousted regime's army, from Lebanon after his detention based on an arrest warrant issued in absentia by the Lebanese judiciary. He is accused of committing crimes such as intentional murder, torture leading to death, and attempted acts to ignite a civil and sectarian war. Issa faces trial in Damascus as part of transitional justice efforts to hold accountable those responsible for violations over the past years, following the Syrian factions' takeover of the country in December 2024, which ended the 61-year rule of the Baath Party.
