The selection of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the President of Bangladesh comes after the resignation of the previous president due to health reasons. He is the candidate of the ruling National Party, which holds a large parliamentary majority. While the presidency in Bangladesh’s parliamentary system is primarily a ceremonial position, Alamgir, who is 78 years old, is expected to win overwhelmingly to become the country’s head of state. His victory aims to complete a five-year presidential term, amidst tense political conditions following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina’s government, her fleeing to India, her conviction for crimes against humanity, and her continued refusal to attend her trial in Dhaka.
