The article discusses the ruling "Civil Contract" party's plan in Armenia to dismiss the Catholicos of All Armenians as part of an unprecedented escalation in the conflict between the government and the Armenian Church. The party is preparing to organize a new statutory framework for the church that enhances transparency and ensures the conduct of clergy. This move follows previous accusations of financial misconduct and judicial investigations against Catholicos Karekin II, who is accused of obstructing justice and hindering related inquiries. This escalation reflects deep-seated tensions since the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh crisis, along with developments in political and religious policies that threaten to diminish the church's influence within Armenian society.
