Merk and Modyr reach new skin cancer milestone

Merk and Moderna announced positive results from the final phase of a clinical trial for a new vaccine to treat advanced melanoma skin cancer, using mRNA technology. The results showed a statistically significant improvement in relapse-free survival when the treatment was combined with the drug Keytruda, compared to the drug alone, although specific numbers were not disclosed. This personalized therapy is based on identifying specific mutations in each patient to activate the immune system to attack cancer cells. These are the first such results for cancer treatment using mRNA technology in Phase 3 trials, and the companies plan to submit the data for regulatory approval in the near future.
