Egyptian League Title Race Widens
The 2026-2027 Egyptian Premier League season begins amid varying ambitions among the major clubs (Zamalek, Pyramids, and Al-Ahly) and a historic absence of Ismaily. The season operates under a two-phase system involving 20 teams, divided into one group competing for the title and another facing relegation. This format will remain until the 2028-2029 season, when the league will return to its traditional structure with 18 teams. The modifications have led to a tenfold increase in the champion’s prize money, reaching 50 million Egyptian pounds, and a 300% rise in the value of broadcast deals. Zamalek faces a registration ban due to its debts and is grappling with administrative crises, while Pyramids aims for its first league title after strengthening the squad with new signings and appointing a new coach. Al-Ahly hopes to reclaim the title following a disappointing season. The league kicks off with intense matches, highlighted by the confrontation between Zamalek and Alexandria’s Sporting Club.
