Algeria has focused on combating drugs by converting a military barracks in the Ténèsrouft area into a high-security prison for drug traffickers. This was announced during a meeting of the High Security Council chaired by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Additionally, a specialized security agency has been established to fight drugs, similar to agencies in countries like the United States. The measures have concentrated on targeting major drug traffickers and distributors. These steps come amid a rise in drug smuggling, with record seizures of cocaine and pregabalin. It is estimated that more than 3 million people in the country will be drug-dependent by 2024. Security efforts are ongoing to counter smuggling activities and enhance border security along the long borders with Mali and the harsh deserts of Ténèsrouft.
