The United States has returned to Lebanon pieces of lead coffins dating back to the Roman era, which were smuggled out of the city of Tyre during illegal excavations before being stolen and put up for sale. These artifacts are typical of the coffin-making workshops in Tyre and date from between the 2nd and 3rd centuries BCE. Lebanese authorities confirm that the city suffered significant destruction due to Israeli strikes, and that the ancient city is currently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site threatened with danger.
