Pollution caused by the destruction of infrastructure in Gaza, including the flow of sewage water into the Mediterranean Sea, has led to a decline in Israel's water desalination system. As a result, five desalination plants along the coast have shut down, causing a significant shortage of the desalinated water relied upon by 88% of Israel's population. The pollution has also spread to areas in the West Bank and Jordan. The crisis has disrupted water supplies, reduced agricultural irrigation, and raised warnings about long-term damage to crops. Additionally, there have been criticisms of policies that excessively depend on desalination and ignore natural water reservoirs. Authorities are working to increase water extraction from wells and Lake Tiberias, but experts warn of the system's fragility and the risk that the crisis could worsen if pollution continues.
