Kathy Hochul vs Trump over NY counter-terrorism funding
The crisis between New York Governor Kathy Hochul and U.S. President Donald Trump is escalating due to the federal administration withholding $87 million in counter-terrorism and homeland security funding allocated to the state. This funding was intended to enhance law enforcement efforts and protect New York City from security threats. Hochul has called for the release of these funds before the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, pointing out that continued withholding jeopardizes the city's security efforts, especially given New York’s status as an internationally significant city. Trump’s administration responded that a portion of the funds has been sent and that more than $300 million in homeland security money remains unspent. They accused the state of creating an unwarranted financial crisis, while Hochul stressed that the damage caused by withholding the funding hinders counter-terrorism programs and threatens the safety of residents.
