The magazine "Der Spiegel" revealed that a fraud network exploited the legacy of Nazi victims by forging Jewish genealogies to deceive German authorities and obtain German citizenship. The scammers created fictitious resumes and genealogies claiming that their members were descendants of Nazi victims who had been forced to flee Germany. The scheme relied on exploiting the flexibility of Article 116 of the Basic Law and the requirements of the German nationality law, which permit reclaiming German citizenship without the need to live in Germany or speak German. The traffickers used intermediaries to sell citizenship services for amounts exceeding 500,000 euros, using forged documents authenticated by notaries and submitted to German missions abroad. Investigations showed that real families discovered individuals claiming kinship with them, and some of the forged genealogies included large numbers of children and grandchildren to facilitate the fraud. The investigation is ongoing, with 32 suspects identified, some of whom have already obtained citizenship, amid widespread doubts about the true size of the network.
