Maduro seeks charges dropped on immunity basis
Nicolas Maduro, the former Venezuelan president and current detainee in the United States, has rejected the request to dismiss drug trafficking charges against him on the grounds of his presidential immunity and his status as a former head of a sovereign state. His attorneys argue that the U.S. judiciary lacks jurisdiction to prosecute a foreign leader, reflecting a legal principle that heads of state are immune from criminal proceedings in U.S. courts except within their own countries. This case follows his arrest by U.S. forces in January, where he faces charges related to drug smuggling, while Maduro maintains his innocence and describes himself as a "war prisoner." The lawsuit is scheduled to be heard in a New York court on November 7, with his initial trial session set for June 2027.
