FATF Warns of Rising Global Money Laundering
The Financial Action Task Force has warned of the increasing use of professional money laundering networks, which now employ sophisticated methods utilizing encrypted communications and modern financial technologies, making them difficult to trace. Reports indicate that these networks, which previously focused primarily on laundering proceeds from drug trafficking and smuggling, have expanded to include funding of terrorism, cybercrimes, fraud, and cross-border organized crime. The report explains that professional service providers such as lawyers and accountants play a role in facilitating these operations by establishing complex legal and financial structures, relying on tools for concealment and advanced technology. It recommends strengthening international cooperation and information exchange, as well as tightening oversight of non-bank transfers and digital assets, to counteract the phenomenon’s increasing ability to hide activities and its expanding global reach.
