French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham discussed in their first official conversation the relations between the two countries, focusing on the illegal migration crisis across the English Channel and cooperation between the UK and the European Union. Burnham emphasized the importance of expanding the success of reducing migrant crossings to all of Europe, with a plan to deploy a rapid response team of 45 French officers on the beaches to confront boats. The meeting also addressed ways to strengthen European-British rapprochement, with the UK rejecting a return to the single market or customs union, despite concerns about the impact of EU policies on the British industrial sector, especially the steel industry. The two sides also discussed steps to produce Scalp missiles in Ukraine and initiatives to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, amid ongoing the Russian-Ukrainian war.
