The U.S. administration announced its intention to end protections for wolves, which are considered a threatened species, prompting widespread outrage from environmental organizations. President Donald Trump requested the Interior Secretary to determine within 90 days whether the gray and Mexican wolves meet the criteria for lifting protections, a move that could encourage states to reduce hunting restrictions. Before European settlers arrived, the number of wolves in the United States was approximately 250,000, but it has significantly decreased, currently estimated at over 7,600 gray wolves and 317 Mexican wolves by the end of 2025. In 2022, the court reinstated the policy of removing protections for the gray wolf that had begun in the 1970s. Environmental activists question the utility of this decision, arguing that it primarily serves the interests of livestock farmers and does not contribute to lowering meat prices or helping families affected by rising costs.
