The ruling Serbian Progressive Party has proposed that President Aleksandar Vučić assume the position of Prime Minister if he wins the upcoming early parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25, 2026. These elections come amid widespread political tension following nationwide protests and the train station massacre in Novi Sad in 2024, which resulted in the deaths of 16 people and sparked widespread protests against corruption and government incompetence. The elections are expected to be held earlier than planned in a charged atmosphere, as populists seek to regain power despite significant discontent with the current situation. Vučić stated that he will call for elections soon and will resign from the premiership to participate actively in the campaign, with elections potentially being held later for the presidency as well.
