The far-right German party, Alternative for Germany, led the results of the Saxony-Anhalt state elections, receiving between 44% and 44.5% of the votes. This puts it ahead of the Christian Democratic Union, which is expected to obtain around 18.5%. If these figures are confirmed after the final tally, the party will secure approximately 39 out of 42 seats to form a parliamentary majority. This reflects a decline in Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s popularity, who had attempted to weaken the far-right party's support by adopting a more stringent approach toward immigration and security. These results indicate the strength of the far-right in the region, even though the party has not yet surpassed the absolute majority threshold to fully form the government.
