The Alternative for Germany (far-right) party has topped the election results in the state of Saxony-Anhalt with between 44% and 44.5% of the vote, reflecting its strong expanding influence in eastern Germany and a decline in the Christian Democratic Union, which received around 18.5%. The Alternative is estimated to secure about 39 seats out of 83 in the regional parliament, which is not enough to form a government on its own without a coalition. These results come at a time when Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his government are facing increasing political pressures, and they indicate the growing strength of the far-right in the country, with the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution classifying the party as a far-right extremist entity.
