The far-right populist party "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) achieved unprecedented electoral results in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, securing 44.4% of the votes. This was a significant lead over the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which received 18.4%. The outcome represents a major blow to Chancellor Friedrich Merz and marks the strongest advance for the populist party in the state, potentially paving the way for it to form a government independently or through alliances. It also confirms a shift among voters toward the far right and reflects a rejection of the federal government's policies.
