The article tells the story of Huda Khatei, a Syrian activist who survived a chemical attack in 2013 that resulted in the death of her brother. Today, she is working to rebuild a women’s center in Duma, focusing on the issue of transitional justice in Syria. It notes that trials of President Bashar al-Assad and senior officials have led to a death sentence issued in absentia in Damascus, but actual implementation remains unlikely, especially given the prisoner extradition agreement with Russia and the obstacle posed by the death penalty. The article explains that comprehensive justice requires investigating the missing persons, providing reparations, and implementing institutional reforms. It emphasizes that millions of Syrians are suffering from the impacts of war, including killings, arbitrary detention, and chemical weapon use. It also stresses the importance of involving victims in the justice process, pointing out that current measures remain symbolic without true accountability for all. The future goal is to find the missing and hold responsible parties accountable, with Khatei continuing to demand justice and honor the memory of the victims.
