UN Warns of Health Risks from Phenomena
The World Meteorological Organization warns of the increasing wildfires and heatwaves that generate hazardous microscopic pollutants airborne, threatening human health and the environment. Studies have shown that smoke from fires contains fine particles (PM2.5) which are more toxic than car exhaust emissions, and since the 1990s, these have contributed to a significant rise in deaths, with heatwaves and wildfires responsible for killing over 100,000 people between 2010 and 2018. The organization calls for improved environmental monitoring and the implementation of coordinated policies to combat air pollution linked to climate change, which exacerbates wildfires and amplifies the spread of harmful microscopic pollutants.
