The article discusses the future of the United Nations peacekeeping force "UNIFIL" in southern Lebanon, which is scheduled to conclude its operations on December 31, 2026, after more than 45 years since its establishment. France and Italy are working on developing plans for a potential multinational alternative to ensure security stability, amidst Lebanese concerns over an security vacuum should the international forces withdraw. "UNIFIL" primarily focuses on monitoring the situation, supporting the Lebanese Army, and facilitating humanitarian access. However, its role is complicated by the ongoing presence of Hezbollah and the challenges of disarmament, in addition to the Lebanese Army assuming security responsibilities despite resource shortages, especially given its inability to monopolize weapons. Efforts are underway to extend the force’s mandate, but international support remains limited. Meanwhile, it is expected that the mission will gradually withdraw, leaving security responsibilities to the Lebanese Army, amid ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in the region.
