The number of Muslims in Germany increased from 4.7 million in 2015 to nearly 7 million last year, mainly due to an increase in immigration from countries with Muslim backgrounds, especially from Syria. However, participation in Islamic religious education classes remains low, with the percentage of Muslim students ranging from 2% in Saarland to 15% in Bavaria. The availability of these classes varies across German states; in some areas, they are offered based on religious or Islamic studies, often limited to a small number of schools. There are calls to expand their reach in order to counter extremist propaganda and strengthen religious education.
