The renewed collapse of the Happiness Building in Gaza highlights the ongoing crisis of damaged buildings that now pose a threat to the lives of thousands of displaced people, as winter approaches. The structure, which was bombed during the war, had previously served as a makeshift shelter and now faces severe fragility after its floors were destroyed and its structural integrity weakened, increasing the risk of collapse. Data indicates that more than 80% of buildings in the Gaza Strip are at risk, with over 700 structures in Gaza alone vulnerable to collapse, including high-rise buildings such as the Surani Tower. Debris, estimated at 60 million tons, continues to accumulate, hindering reconstruction efforts and the sheltering of residents. The risks are exacerbated by fragile infrastructure and the lack of heavy equipment necessary for debris removal, putting the lives of displaced individuals in danger as the rainy season and winter draw near.
