The article addresses the displacement of populations in Timbuktu and Mopti regions in Mali due to armed conflicts. Armed groups have imposed their rule through force, employing intimidation, looting, and repressive practices such as demanding zakat, wearing black robes, and banning music and traditional customs. These violations have led thousands of civilians to flee, with approximately 290,000 Malian refugees registered in Mauritania by July 2026. Many became victims of extreme violence, with numerous killed during their escape, and subjected to theft and marginalization by both armed groups and the Malian army. The report highlights that civilians are suffering from the most severe violations, caught between the threat of armed groups and the pressure of government forces. Widespread psychological trauma and property loss have resulted in mass displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis.
