Tensions are escalating between Turkey and Greece in the Aegean Sea, with Turkey calling on Greece to respect the status of its unmilitarized islands. Turkey has also criticized visits by military officials and the presence of troops on Kastellorizo, an island demilitarized under the 1947 treaty. Turkey demands that no facts be imposed on the ground that conflict with its international commitments, reaffirming its commitment to dialogue and good neighborliness. In response, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that Greece is ready to defend its sovereign rights and announced measures to support the island’s residents. Meanwhile, Turkey has deployed special infantry forces to bolster its military presence in the area, amid ongoing border disputes and mutual accusations between the two countries.
