Mauritania targets online extortion ring
The Mauritanian government announced the detention of six individuals during a security campaign aimed at dismantling a financial blackmail network. The network is accused of targeting bloggers active on social media, most of whom reside abroad. The operation follows the arrest of the family of an opposition blogger known for his political stances. He denies the charges against him and asserts that his targeting is politically motivated. The Minister of Culture explained that the network is used to spread false news and for extortion purposes, emphasizing that the investigation is still ongoing to identify those involved and to uncover sources of funding.
