World Coffee Day's global significance
The world annually celebrates World Coffee Day on October 1st, which was officially launched in 2015 during Expo Milano, with the aim of raising awareness about the coffee industry and supporting farmers, especially smallholders. The history of coffee is linked to the highlands of Ethiopia, but its cultivation and preparation largely developed in Yemen before spreading throughout the Arab world and Europe. Common types of coffee include Arabica and Robusta, and Arabic coffee holds a special place as part of hospitality and generosity traditions. UNESCO has recognized Arabic coffee as part of intangible cultural heritage. Coffee is considered a source of antioxidants, and its consumption has been associated with various health benefits, though attention should be paid to the amount and manner of additions. World Coffee Day encourages discovering new varieties, experimenting with innovative brewing methods, and supporting sustainable practices, while also raising awareness about the story of coffee and its journey from the farm to the cup.
