Jordan Starts Seventh Population Census
Jordan has begun conducting the 2026 General Population and Housing Census, which will continue until the end of October, with the participation of approximately 12,000 researchers. The goal is to update demographic, social, and population data across the kingdom. The census aims to provide up-to-date information that will assist in formulating more accurate government and development plans. It covers all residents on Jordanian territory, whether Jordanian or non-Jordanian, with a focus on collecting data about the demographic composition, needs, and services, while maintaining privacy. The process also includes a trial of electronic data collection for specific households. This census is part of a series that began in 1952, with evolving methodologies and figures. The last census recorded Jordan's population at 9.5 million people, approximately 69% of whom were Jordanian and 31% non-Jordanian, most of whom were Syrians. This reflects the impact of political crises and migrations on the demographic makeup. The results of the census are essential for economic and social planning and for effectively directing resources, especially given the significant demographic changes in recent years.
