Lebanese prisoners risk catastrophe with seven deaths pending constitutional ruling
This report highlights the worsening humanitarian situation at Roumieh Central Prison due to the continued hunger strike by hundreds of inmates for more than two weeks, in protest against the suspension of the general amnesty law in Lebanon. The strike has resulted in the death of 7 prisoners since early August, five of whom due to refusing food and water, amid rapid health deterioration and an increase in critical cases to 51. Medical and security authorities are taking urgent measures, but the situation is worsening as more prisoners join the strike and the risk of a humanitarian catastrophe grows, awaiting the Constitutional Council's decision regarding the amnesty law, which has delayed the implementation of hundreds of potential releases.
